Need a Spot
Just finished an engine swap in my 87 Raider. The engine that came out was a 2.6L 4cyl. with an automatic transmission. The engine that went in is also a 2.6L 4cyl. that came out of an 87 Mitsubishi Montero with a manual transmission. So all said and done, I have the Montero eng. hooked up to the automatic trans. in the Raider. My problem is the starter drive gear wont disengage from the driveplate when trying to start. I tested the starter, it is o.k. Also tried shimming the starter, still no success. My question to anyone out there is this; what are the measurements of the crankshaft adapter, crankshaft bushing, and adapter plates that are used in the driveplate assembly to the back of the motor? Im thinkin there is a spacing problem in that area. Any response would be appreciated, Im goin nuts here!!!

Don't know your answers. But try searching +transmission +starter and see what you get. Most have gone from Mt to AT, and I am pretty sure the starter question has come up in that regards.

Also, edit your signature to show your ride specs. It helps others help you.

Welcome the forum.

When you swapped the flywheel for the flexplate did you get all three parts installed? There is a spacer between the crank and flexplate, did it get back in there?

Did you have to pull the engine up to the trans with bolts? This part of the question is to insure the torque converter was fully engaged into the pump.

WE think we got the flexplate and second adapter, but looks like the crankshaft bushing and first adapter are still on the back of the original motor. the chiltons shows crankshaft bushing, 1 cranksaft adapter, flexplate, then 2nd adapter plate (ENGINE FRONT TO BACK->) . not 100% sure. Is the crankshaft adapter and bushing right behind of the REAR main seal,FACING THE TRANS has 6 equally spaced holes that line up with the drive plate screw holes (not on top of, linear line, about 2 in. apart)? Is this the crankshaft adapter with the crankshaft bushing in the middle?(I AM LOOKING AT THE BACK OF THE MOTOR REMOVED THAT ORIG. HAD THE AT IN IT.) PLEASE ADVISE!!! [color:"red"] [/color]

IIRC, the order is crankshaft rear flange, machined 6 hole round adapter, flexplate, and a flat plate steel star washer that "may" have tabs to bend up to lock flexplate to crank bolts.

Yup, it sounds like the adaptor stayed on the old engine. It is just thick enough to bring the flexplate forward to be engaged with the starter. Kinda sucks but you need to get it in there.

You might want to ask rxinhed, he is up your way. I believe he even has a field service manual.

Good Luck.

Mike,

I saw that my wife had posted in your thread. The FSM (Page 9-57) depicts a few different parts for the stick vs. auto.

You're welcome to borrow the book when you get the key.
