Well I have to agree with you that not having the holes in the housing of the DE tapped is a PITA, but I've never had any of the hardware snap off.
On those lamps I usually run one of the bolts into all the holes before I get the lamp in position, so that it already has the threads tapped.

I had such a migraine after working on this thing last night, which is still with me this morning, that I think it might have induced a small stroke.
