I have is a choke for cold starts...

This isn't a choke. It is a throttle. It does the same thing as keeping your foot on the gas pedal. It is great for letting your engine warm up while you clean the windows
or drink coffee? Just watch out because at least with mine the throttle increases as the vehicle warms up.

Thanks - I had wondered how a fuel-injected engine could have a "choke" -(this is what the sales guy called it) -to my albeit limited knowledge chokes are only used with carburetors

If its a diesel, it has em. No light, just listen to the clicks. Turn key just before starter... you'll hear a loud "click". Wait for it... you'll hear another click, after 2-5 seconds. Now start it. If its cold, you may hear a series of "click-clicks" as the afterglow system continues to heat the plugs, for up to 30 seconds or so.

Winter time, this is obviously very power hungry, so make sure you have a good battery (or batteries) with lots of cold cranking amps.

Thanks Phil. At what temperature do these normally come on? Temps have been running around -2 to + 3, I get the two clicks, but the glow plug indicator light doesn't come on. Is that what you mean by "no light"?

There is no light.

All you need to do is turn to 'on'. Listen for a loud click by the glove box. Wait a few seconds and you'll hear a second click. Now turn on the Pajero. The colder it is outside, the more clicks you'll hear once it's running just like they said above.

Body Damage is Cool
When it's below zero, mine seems to start a lot easier if I glow it once, then shut off, back on and crank during the second glow. The idle seems to smooth out faster, and a lot less smoke.

I do the same. The colder it gets the more times I glow it.

Multiple glowing. I didn't think of that. Good advice guys.

Q. it won't hurt the plugs in the long run over winter, will it ? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/baby.gif" alt="" />

they can take it. Just be careful not to do it too many times for their sake and your batteries.

multiple glowing is kind of useless...I do it twice and anymore than that doesn't change it. mine always has a really shaky start but after 3 seconds it idl's perfect
