They say it's not exacly easy. The real motiviation I think is due to how readily available they are, how cheaps parts are, and how they can be found anywhere.
I think it was Landraider who recently posted about losing the waterpump whil on trail. Headed out in another's rig to the local store, got a new pump for something cheap, and had in installed on the trail in no time.
Try doing that with a Mistu 3.0...
I can do it on the trail. My 10,000 mile old timing belt tensioner broke 50 miles from home. I walked a little under a mile to a parts store, they did not have one. My mom lived 15min away and she took me to another parts store, they had one in stock. I put it on in a field. I carry tools. But yeah, it would be a pain in the on a trail.

Are there any tech articles on the swap or is it just a winger for me? I'll start a hunt for a 4.3 I guess. Any recommended year range??

6 posts up Seach for the 4.3 and for users. try users Landraider, BobShaw, BigBlue, Don, and LeeRaider.
Fasteddy's advice is occasionally sound...

I can only find posts about what years (94-96) are the hard ones to work w/....thats mainly all I need. Like some of them say.....if you need to ask too many questions you shouldn't be doing it. Just need steered to an engine!

the guys that did it here used the entire drive train from a blazer to include trans and transfer case. Get with landraider, don or bob shaw. I believe there is an article written in the mitsu section of this site about landraiders rig.

Here's a thread that should give a good idea of what you'll be taking on. Lot's to do for it. There is also the [now] well known turbi swap. Kevin_C once reported 20+ at 70MPH with is and a V6 tranny with the lock-up TC. Don't delude yourself though that that number is easily attainable with the turbo. Kevin has literally countless hours over countless years now of turbo 2.6 exprience. Having said that, I hadn't wrenched save for the basics to keep on the road when I was in HS, and managed to do one myself. Mine still needs tuning and tweaking, which I have trouble finsing time for. My last tank was pushing 17MPG and that is turning 33s.

if i were you i would swap the 2.6 turbo from a starion/conquest for many reasons; its easy to swap in, easy to work on, keep all the room in your engine bay, plenty of power , reliable, and cheap mostly intock parts.

2.6 turbo from a starion/conquest for many reasons; its easy to swap in, easy to work on, keep all the room in your engine bay, plenty of power , reliable, and cheap mostly intock parts. EAISER to swap in. Hard as hell to work on. (change a 2.6 turbo starter, or drill out broken exhaust manifold studs ALL the way in the back.) Takes up MORE room in the engine bay. Tons of mystery boxes, Tons of wiring. Reliable?? I guess thats how much you make it. How many heads, and mikunis are we talking? I've done both, and If I ever do another turbo swap, it will not be with a 2.6.
