ok heres my problem i took my '84 Dodge D-50 Diesel out the other day after making a cold air intake for it and it started leaking oil. not a drip but running out fairly good so i immediately drove it the block and half to my house and shut it down. before she lost the oil it was making this sound like a small machine gun. i looked for a oil pan leak but couldnt tell due to the oil. also i had oil bubbling out from under the oil filler cap? when i took the front timing cover off i noticed the top sprocket for the bottom timing belt was off, the bolt fell out. my question is when i put it back on i have to time it right? the mitsu manual doesnt say about the bottom one and would this being off for like 2 min of run time have done any serious damage. i cant afford costly repair bills right now and dont want to give up my truck.

Any sprockets/belts/pulleys/bolts related to timing that come off when the motor is running is bad and can possibly be dangerous to it.
I would strongly recommend you have a decent mechanic look at it before turning it over again.
The cost to have someone proficient 'look' at it and tell you what, if anything, is wrong is a lot less costly than putting things back together, wingin' it and hoping nothing breaks internally.
Not sure of your mechanical skills, so don't take any offense to what I said.
... good.. bad.. I'm the guy with the gun.

The 2.3 is an interference engine. That means that to top of stroke of the piston occupies the same space as the fully extended exhaust valve.
While we all hope for the best, your machine gun description makes me guess the damage is far from minor..
Do not turn it over again.
Take it to a reputable diesel mechanic (just a local gas or diesel VW owner who could at least point you at a bunch of people to call)

well come to find out it was the top silent shaft sprocket that came off. my dad said that it appeared to have been off for a long time and that it was what was making the sound cuz its happened to him before on his old diesel D50. as for the leak of oil i found this "crack" i was underneath when my dad started the truck and oil poured out of this opening; is this factory opening? im very confused. ![[Linked Image]](http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x265/rednec_d/2.jpg)

My 85 D50 diesel has the same split. I suspect that one or more of your shaft seals are leaking. My old original diesel engine was thick with oil around the silent shafts and crankshaft.
