My Trooper, the '89 2.6, has a front end rattle, and has had for quite awhile. I've looked and can't find anything loose, so I'm coming here once again for suggestions.

Rattle may not be the exact term I want. It's somewhere between a clink and a clank when I go over a bump. The bump can be a small as a Bot's Dot, the little reflective things they glue down the middle of the street in places. It sounds sort of like a small bolt bouncing inside a pretty solid housing. I'm fairly sure its coming from the front driver's side wheel area.

I've opened the front hubs to look at the infamous c-clip, and think its alright. See the picture.

Front Hub, driver's side

Did I go far enough into the hub, or is there another possibility farther in?

I'd really like to fix this. Its worrisome having an unknown rattle. Anyone have suggestions or opinions?

Maybe a Body Mount Bolt?

I've got a couple on the Rodeo that rattle pretty bad.

Smiley, aren't the body mount bolts insulated with rubber doughnuts or something similar? What you're suggesting would mean that that rubber mount is completely gone. Possible?

Jerry, A loose shock mount makes a thunk sound. What I have is a definite clink or a clank. It's metal on metal, with nothing to insulate the sound. It sounds almost, in my imagination, like a nut loose in the bell housing.

This Trooper is my daily driver. There is no apparent problem with the exception of the clank when I hit certain bumps.

auto hubs or manual hubs? I had superwinch hubs on my 88 trooper and they ALWAYS made rattling noises over even the smallest of bumps. It used to drive me crazy. (so I traded it for an Amigo <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />)

Nah...
In my case the rubber is still there; it's just that a couple of the bolts are loose enough that they have room to slide up and down (and rattle -- rather loudly at times).

I pulled the front shock today, driver's side. There's no sign on noise or rattle in the shock. Top and bottom mounting were tight. I have KYB hight pressure. It went back on.

The hubs are Superwinch. For the longest time they were absolutely quiet, no rattle. So, if by chance it is the hubs, they need attention. Still waiting for an answer whether the clip shown in the picture is the one which has given so many people problems.

Where are the body mount bolts located? My manual doesn't address that issue.

While I had the front wheel off and the Trooper on stands, I noticed that the hub has just the slightest bit of wiggle movement. I can lift it just enough to tell that it has moved. It makes just enough noise to be heard, but its not a klink.

Still looking.

Ken

Just because the shock mounts were tight doesn't necessarily mean they were tight enough...hard to say from here though.

I'm still leaning to the hubs. Try this - find a 'known' stretch of street where there are cracks and bumps that will help your trooper make the noise that you hear. Drive down the street in 2wd and notice how much rattle there is. Now lock in the hubs and drive down the street again. If the noise is gone, it means there is free-play in your superwinch hubs when they are unlocked.

I'm tellin' ya, my Superwinches were quiet for a while, then started rattling up a storm after a while. When they were locked in, no rattle...
