I'm still leaning to the hubs. Try this - find a 'known' stretch of street where there are cracks and bumps that will help your trooper make the noise that you hear. Drive down the street in 2wd and notice how much rattle there is. Now lock in the hubs and drive down the street again. If the noise is gone, it means there is free-play in your superwinch hubs when they are unlocked.

I'm tellin' ya, my Superwinches were quiet for a while, then started rattling up a storm after a while. When they were locked in, no rattle...
