I was wondering if the np 231 swap is just as doable in an 89 3.0 auto? If it is, have the seal isues been solved yet? I've done as much reading as I could today but have not found the answers.
Thanks in advance Eric

Holy cow! I wouldn't even call the seal an issue. Get a 23 spline "medium" length shaft if you can find it. Worst case, get a long spline and cut a bit off the end of the shaft.
The seal is easy. Measure the OD of the seal, measure the OD of the t-case input shaft and that will tell you the ID of the new seal. Go to an industrial bearing supplier and give him those specs and find one the same width as the old one. If you can't measure the stuff, bring the parts in and have them measure them for you!
Worry about making new driveshafts and a new t-case shifter.

Thanks guys. I never thought of that about the seals. One more question, Is there an easy way to tell what shaft the t-case has?

Not really. Here's a couple links to help, but realize there really is no rule for the input shaft. Novak Conversions Here's another one that sort of helps: Drivetrain.com Scroll through the list for Jeep vehicles. The most important thing is that you have to verify the length of the input shaft as well as count the splines for yourself.

This won't work for an 89 5 speed, right?

Thanks Nathan. I'll have to help him all I can on this one, since we are talking about the truck formerly known as Betsy III!

So who's actually completed this and running a 231? I've lost track of this and kind of dropped the ball when we lost Matt aka Wyleone. My case and new input shaft are still sitting here....

I've found three 231's to play with so we shall see. Although it looks like my 2.85's may be coming back now as well so now I'm not sure. But I'll try to fit one either way just to see for everyone.

I'm running two of them in a row. No one to my knowledge has done it with a Gen1. I posted some pics a while back showing one held up to a KM148.
