Need a Spot
They have a firing order that you have to duplicate when you replace the wires. If all you are doing is replacing the wires, just do it one at a time to avoid problems. If they will be off for awhile, any manual will have the firing order. Assuming you have an AMC V8, the firing order should be 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. Starting from the #1 cylinder and moving clockwise through the firing order. So the #1 cylinder (front, drivers side) fires first, then work you way around the distributer. You may want to check first, in case you have something else.

wasnt me. gotta friend with a 305 in his 90 wrangler. idle fine and no problems under 40mph. over 40 and it starts to sputter and die. thought maybe some wires could be off but no. not the timing either. not really to sure what it might be other than the fuel pump is to small or the 600 cfm carb is to big. so now its out there and any help would be great. thanks in advance.

Body Damage is Cool
If your friend crossed two spark plug wires, there is no way he could idle fine and have no problems up to 40 mph.

BTW, you were given good advice to just change the spark plug wires one at a time, if you haven't changed them yet. I would add one note: Most sets of spark wires are pre-cut to the proper length. When replacing the wires remove the longest one first, and replace it with the longest one in the new set. Then work down to the next longest, and so on.

Wytee You describe to the fullest a classic fuel FILTER problem!!! Change the filter and you should be OK!
The carb may also have a small filter in the intake...don't forget that one..
In these cases the filter is clogged just enough to allow 40mph of gasoline to pass thru it. When higher speed is needed that gasoline simply won't pass thru and so you get all the sputtering and missing.

It could also be a plugged exhaust,(catalytic converter)if it still has one. The engine can only suck in what it can push out.... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/oink.gif" alt="" />
