Need a Spot
Another question for everybody.
What would it take to put 35x13.5 tires on a stock '91 4Runner?

You would likely need a 4" bracket lift plus about 2" of body lift to clear that size tire:

4" superlift kit will give you more than enough room in and of itself, if you use 12.5" tires on 8" wheels of the appropriate backspacing. Superlift will give you more lift than the Trailmaster or ProComp.

I've got a Superlift IFS lift and their rear springs. I still rub with 33 12.5 on 8" wheels. I think the backspacing or offset or whatever it is is 4". I put a 1" block in the rear in addition to Superlift springs and just barely clear. If there is dirt on my tires, the lugs clip the bodywork. In the front it's not an issue unless I'm turned fully one way or the other. How anyone could squeeze a 35" tire in there with just a 4" lift and no hammering/cutting is beyond me.

I think a lot of the bracket lift kits have a 3.75" - 3.5" max. backspacing requirement. That pushes the tires out wider and increases the likelyhood of rubbing due to the extra width. A buddy in my club had a '92 pickup and 4" Superlift kit, 3.5" b/s wheels and rubbed a little w/ 33x12.50s as well. He did a 2" body lift and then was able to clear 35x12.50s.

Interesting. My ex-wife's 94 4Runner never had any rubbing problems w/ the 33's and had plenty of room to fit 35's with the SL kit. I actually de-tuned the torsion bars to get it down to a 4" lift.

That's not exactly true...

They advertise the kit as being 4-5" but the lift itself is 4". The extra -1" comes from them advising you to do a tbar crank. It borders on false advertising...

The recipe for 35's seems to be a 3" bl and a 4" suspension lift to clear with no trimming. And then the wheels as already mentioned need to be more than 3.5" backspaced.

I disagree with you on this. There are two things about the SL kit that are very different from other kits out there. First, the rear drop bracket is a 4.5" drop. Second, the bumpstop drops are 3.5" instead of 4". These allo increased suspension travel.

I installed one on a 94 4Runner that had 25mm Downey torsion bars. The torsion adjusters were not long enough to drop the front end to the 4" mark. The truck was at almost 6" when first installed. I pulled the torsion bars and re-indexed the front to drop the front end.

The only two things that I did different was to install a set of Rockstomper 1/4" balljoint spacers to prevent balljoint bind and pull the torsion bars; I don't like working on the front end when there is stress on the upper a-arms. At the end, I had a level-sitting 4Runner that had 4" of lift front and rear. It was a little soft up front, though.

In the instructions that came with my Superlift kit, that i used when I put my Superlift kit on, they tell you in plain English to do up to a 1" tbar crank to gain up to 5" out of the kit.

I don't know why you got the only kit that was 6", but the ones they are selling now are 4" and with a 1" tbar crank up to 5".

Body Damage is Cool
The superlift drop brackets do give ~1/2" more drop. Not really noticeable. Sounds like bkg had an issue with the torsion bars being cranked too much, not the actual superlift.

Either way, all the 4" ifs lifts suck
