As far as block heater versus oilpan heater? Others may have differing opinions...but... the block heater warms the coolant in the water jacket, which results in a quicker warm up time. AFAIC, oil pan heater is good for initial startup, since the warmer oil should flow easier, but otherwise will not heat up the engine as quick as the coolant. Some have also installed inline coolant heaters, which simply go in-line on the lower rad hose, but I didn't find it nearly as effective as the frost-plug type block heater (I had an in-line on my V6 Raider).
