I was going to vote for either bad master or slave or air in the line or leak,
until I read this part. I can't figure out how you could hold the peddle down then suddenly have it work (unless maybe the slave moved a little bit, then the clutch started slipping). Letss hope that replacing the hydraulics fixes it for you.
