I have a 22r that I'm trying to get running (still <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />) and am confused about the fuel pump. Truck came with an inline electric pump on the passenger side frame rail; there is a block off plate on the side of the head where the mechanical pump goes and there is no return fuel line; it was plugged up with a bolt through the hose.

Anyways, the pump went out after a year and I replaced it with the same style electric pump from autozone. The page says it puts out 2.5 to 4.5 psi. Do I need to fab a fuel return line? Does it need a regulator? I was curious if it put more stress on the pump by not having a return. I keep a spare just in case. Also, not sure if its related but, my truck has always ran very rich for some reason.

The factory pump doesn't need a regulator. It does (in every case I've seen) need a return line. The original hard return line should be on the firewall, passenger side somewhere.

The factory return hard line is still there...but It was disconnected by the previous owner.

So what I have are two lines: one feed line from the electric pump to the carb;

and

one line from the tank that is hanging next to the carb, that has been capped off by the previous owner. This is the original return hard line your talking about but where does it connect to?

EDIT: Basically I'm retarded and don't know where the return line hooks up too....hopefully that better explains it lol

Stock carb?
If so, why not just use a stock fuel pump to begin with?

The stock fuel pump has the return on it.

Forgot to mention I have the LC adjustable timing gear and don't feel like messing with unless for a last resort.
