Getting the Wheeling Fever
|
hey all i have an 87 4runna with the 22re in it... friday the motor started leaking out the front of the motor. i thought i tracked the leak to the front oil seal, behind the crankshaft pulley, so i replaced that and did the sleeve on the crankshaft pulley too. The motor leaks even more now. is there something i missed? is there an easy way to track the leak? it is hard to tell where it is coming from exactly because the fan is blowing the oil all over. any suggestions?? thanks Jay

You need a sleeve on the crank pulley to cover the groove on the sealing surface.
A quick fix (without a sleeve, or when none is available) would be to grind 1/4" off the back of the seal, installing it all the way in. This moves the sealing surface to a new spot on the crank pulley, sealing the leak.

i figured out that the glue to attach the sleeve had failed or didn't set up properly and had slipped out of place, causing the leak. I have since replaced the sleeve and seal, no more leak thanks!! jay

Cool; this is common. Glad you figured it out. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />
