Can't tell you how many times I have been "saved" by a manual:

1. Dead battery at 12000' on a Sunday PM in the Rockies; used the highlift jack to push it up a steep bank and then able to clutch start it.

2. Dove into a deep hole last winter at the dunes that killed the engine and ran the starter to pull it out the hole (I've done that in the middle of rivers before as well when wheeling by myself).
