Getting the Wheeling Fever
Sorry Pajerist but I agree with Redbull and others. I'm a diesel-only guy going back to my late teens, so I definately want to come to the aid of any other diesel guy, but....

When I was 19 or 20 I delivered bread. When I was loading up the truck at 3:00 AM and the guy next to me had his truck idling at the dock, it made me sick. I had to ask him to load it cold then pull away from the dock to warm 'er up.

I pick up my stock for my wine shop in my Chev diesel and I back into the warehouse so they can forklift the pallet in. I always pull onto their lot and let 'er cool down there before backing into the building, then I shut it down as soon as I pull in. I also leave the front wheels outside (slight downhill) so I can roll out before firing it back up.

I know a warehouse if differently equipped than a parking garage, but the basic consideration of others is the same.

Sorry I couldn't be on your side this time. Cheers. Brett

I live in a condo with underground parking similar to your pajerist.

Here's what I do.

Morning. Start up, idle for 1 min until the coughing stops and slowly drive out and around the block. By the time you drive 2 blocks, it will be fine for our weather (even winter).

When I go home.. I make sure that I just cruise home slowly (1,200 max RPM) for a few blocks before I get home. Once I open the gate and drive in, by that time it's been 2 mins and I shut it off.

You do not need to have it idling for 5 mins at startup and 3 mins at shutdown unless you race 2,500+ RPM all the way to your parking garage.

... good.. bad.. I'm the guy with the gun.

Agreed with all above...

I've found that my truck takes a long time to reach operating temp by simply idling, so I don't let it idle for any length of time. If plugged in, I start it, put on the seat belt, adjust radio, etc, then go. If not plugged in, I wait until the idle settles to steady (~ a minute), set the throttle at about 1000rpm, then drive slowly/steadily for the first 5 minutes. As SOON as I start driving, the temp gauge starts rising, and it heats up very quickly.

For shut down, I do like the rest of the folks here: drive slower (keep the turbo boost to a minimum), for the last couple of minutes.

I think 5 minutes shutdown time is excessive, and a waste of fuel, if you're smart about cooling it down 'before' you stop driving...

Thanks, guys!

It gives me some ideas how to deal with it.

Body Damage is Cool
Good luck. If this is a condo board complaint, maybe write them a letter explaining your side and what you are going to do. Documentation is good.
