Brotherhood! I need your advice for to answer for this:
Quote

Formal complaint:

There is a diesel vehicle parked in stall #120 (isolated corner stall) that runs his vehicle for over 5+ minutes at idle prior to shut down, and at start up. This creates excess amounts of fumes and hazardous amounts of CO2. This stall is located right next to the elevator entrance which can trap these poisoness gases as ventilation is limited within the confined space. The reason behind this activity is to ôcool downö the spines on the spindle incased in the turbo of a turbo diesel vehicle (on older vehicles). Warm up is unnecessary to the extent of 5+ minutes as the glow plug is warmed up prior to the engine starting on these older vechicles. Solutions proposed is for this gentleman to ôcool downö outside prior to parking or moving spots to a more central and ventilated area away from the elevator room entrance û which was the case in that this exercise was not as noticeable.

In all honesty, no matter what vehicle, there should not be anyone idling there car in a confined car port for obvious health concerns. CO2 is a silent killer as an odorless, tasteless and colorless gas.

Thanks!

Underground parking stalls are equiped with special ventilation systems. There is no difference between gas cars idling and diesels idling. I assume you pay a parking fee or a strata fee, tell him or her to get stuffed in a polite way.

Elevators are also equiped with ventilation systems.

if that were me, I would keep it idling for 10 minutes just to spite them.

Cheers, torquemonster!
I wish I could too. BUT I NEVER 'calm down' more that 3 minutes and 'warm up' more than 4-5 minutes.

I can 'calm down' on the street, no problem at all, but what to do with 'warm up'?

Thanks

its a heated parking garage I take it??? if its heated then you don't really need to warm it up. if its not heated I wouldn't change a thing...you can cause severe engine damage if you drive it when its freezing cold.

We exhale CO2. The complainant has incorrectly attacked a "greenhouse gas" as toxic. The intended gas would be CO (carbon monoxide) which actually is pretty bad for you. The firestations here have vacuum collection systems that attach directly to the exhaust pipes of the trucks and ambulances since apparently Diesel exhaust has been associated with certain, shall we say, bad things. Other press recently identified Diesel exhaust as causing decreased circulation during exercise.
Sorry, but your ill-advised author actually has a point. Good luck with the real issue troubling humankind - how to get along with other people whose viewpoints differ from our own.

I agree. Idling indoors is bad in any vehicle. Why not shorten your warm-up time inside, then pull outside slowly and continue there until you feel the vehicle is ready to proceed.

5 minute cool-down (if the writer is correct) is also more than you need.
