AlrightI know I'm a noob and whatnot but I did my search and didn't really find what I was looking for. I'm getting a ported head with oversized valves, mid-range cam, and dual sidedraft 36mm mikunis off of a buddy for pretty cheap. I plan on rebuilding the motor, and sending that head out to be freshened up.and carbs to be rebuilt. What I want to know, is what would you guys do for the bottom end to match the top end? I'm looking to get the most hp,out of mid-high range rpm, without stroking or turboing. This truck is used strictly in the mud, it is driven onto the trailer, off the trailer, wheeled and loaded back up, so i'm not concerned about trail capibility or crawling. I got about $1500-$1700 to work with on the motor. The motor is the first thing I'm building and the rest of the truck I'll finish as I go. So let me know what you would do motorwise.

I'd get some higher compression pistons (maybe 10:1) and some arp bolts. you could balance the rods + crank as well, and get the crank knife edged if you like. I'd get a turbo/High volume oil pump as well.
Good luck!

thanks guys. That one article definitley has some nice tips that I didn't know. However its more based towards an economic build. I dont care if I gotta run race gas and only get 1 mile to the gallon though. I just want to build the nastiest motor I can for the money I have and to be dependable for about 9 months of weekends out of the year then pull it and freshen it up. I notice one suggestion was 10.5 pistons. Why not go all out with 12.5?

If you're going that high run it on propane.
You could run it on AV gas, but expect very limited life from 02 sensors - AV gas costs about what premium does in my area... maybe a little less.

Real power - motor swap... A serious money NA 22R-series, you're looking at 160hp, carb'd or stand alone EFI - and another $2-$3.5k on top of the cost of a basic rebuild. It's cheaper to swap.

believe me i would love to do his setup, but i already got the worked head/cam/and dual mikunis, so i figured with them and an additional 1500 or so, i could build up a pretty sweet motor.

Race gas? alright go with the 12.5's, overbore, and polish up that crank nice <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> get some nice ARP studs in there and rev it to 7 grand... (you'll need vavlesprings too if it doesnt have those)

oversized valves, port match header a 261 duration cam with an adjustable cam gear. boost your compression and run the arp studs as mentioned. set your quench tight to about .007" run a heavy flywheel. msd ignition box. run a wideband o2 sensor to a wideband air fuel gauge so you can tune on it easier..those dual carbs are a ***** to tune from what ive heard, i dont know first hand though.

261 cam? nah gotta disagree, remember since he's got sidedrafts and exhaust and such, he's gonna want high RPM power... not low RPM torque (need the power where the parts shine)... a 270 cam or something even wilder for sure... but he may have a cam already...
