I would examine the cover and base where the t-stat fits to make sure there is no damage. Also, check the bolt to make sure they are not bottoming out in the holes or the holes stripping out. On the stock gasket, make sure the t-stat fits into the groove inside the o-ring type gasket before setting it in place. I have never used a sealer there and never had a leak.
