I have a recurring coolant leak around the thermostat. I didn't apply any sealer to the gasket at the time of install. I am guessing some sealer is needed. If so, what type of sealer is appropriate? Will Toyota FIPG work?

The gasket on the 22R is rubber and should need no sealer. I ensure the groove it sits in is clean and the housing is clean Assemble and tighten evenly, not too hard. Should seal like a champ. Danny

I would examine the cover and base where the t-stat fits to make sure there is no damage. Also, check the bolt to make sure they are not bottoming out in the holes or the holes stripping out. On the stock gasket, make sure the t-stat fits into the groove inside the o-ring type gasket before setting it in place. I have never used a sealer there and never had a leak.

Thanks for the suggestions. For the record, I was using a generic tstat from autozone which started to leak a year or so after it was installed. I've had a couple now that have gone that way. I'll try a Toyota tstat this time and see if the gasket performs any better.

I find the Toyota t-stats and gaskets work the best. Have been running the same t-stat and gasket in my '85 for 9 years or so now, still works perfect.

Finally got around to installing a Toyota tstat and gasket. The Toyota gasket was slightly thicker than the generic, and the thermostat was more substantial. I would never consider using a generic tstat and/or gasket again after seeing the differences compared to oem. Only been a couple of days but so far so good.

I'd advise anyone changing a thermostat to put anti-seize compound on the hold-down bolts. These steel bolts will seize up in the aluminum housing and break off when you try to remove them, especially if there's been ANY coolant near the bolt hole. Anti-seize is your friend.
