My guess would be something in the tank partially blocking the pickup, especially since it solved itself.

That happened to me with an old Dodge once. I changed the fuel tank, put in a used one. It had a small amount of fuel in it, in the shuffle something got knocked loose. I worked on that one for a few days, finally took the tank back out. That one had an inspection plate which I took off, I retrieved some leaves covering the pickup screen.

And yep, could have just been some water, too....*EB
