I have a 93 T auto 4by. Gets 15-17. Don't drive it hard but have lots of hills to climb. Always carrying pounds as well. Was in the 13-14 range until I did a MAF cleanup and brazed the O2 sensor boss on the pipe where it was leaking. Have a exhaust system about to die and am looking into headers to get out of the stupid reverse flow crossover from the passenger side, That should help. Lots of buck though. Sure wish there were more options for the 3.0 exhaust as I believe that is the biggest factor on mileage. My 2by 93 3.0 got 18 - although it was 400 pounds lighter.

What to expect - 180 ci motor with a 4000 pound vehicle....In the good old days 18 was a miracle. (soon to be 61yo). In fact 160 K w/o a motor rebuild every 60 K was a miracle. FYI - GM offered oil filters as an option through 1957!!!

Since you guys are on the topic of gas mileage, what is the average for a stock '85 4Runner 22re with stock tires. I get about 15 around town and 20 on the hwy. Is that pretty normal? How bad can the Oxygen sensor interfere with mpg?

I too have a 1995 Toyota (4 X 4) that I just purchased and was amazed that I only get about 15 mpg! I also noted that it has a gas smell when I start it, and was told by a friend that the oxygen sensor in these models (he has one) tend to go out frequently and may be the cause of the bad mpg. Anyone else hear of something along these lines? Thanks!

15mpg/city isn't all that unusual for these rigs, driving habits tend to have the biggest impact on city driving. I would start w/a minor tune-up, check/run a higher amount of air pressure in the tires(with in reason).

The pre-OBII O2 sensors do get lazy with age, and while not registering a fail code can still be bad and need to be replaced. Factory spec for replacement is every 80k, if you don't know when yours was replaced last it is time to change it.

You are about 3mpgs off on city and about 5-8 off on the hwy from the average. Age/tune-up schedule/driving habits could be the cause of this difference, as well as tire size to gear ratio.

The O2 sensor measures the amnount of oxygen in the exhaust, it basically tries to find the optimum ratio, and will lean/richen the air:fuel ratio. A lazy/failing can allow the mixture to run rich, causing you to use more fuel than you can burn.

5-8 off on highway average? If you're getting 28mpg out of a 22re 4x4 pickup, it's only because it's falling off a cliff at the time.

I've owned 12-15 22re's. Best mileage I ever achieved was 22. Averaged 18-19 combined city/hwy.

Thats seems right on par with me. I don't drive like a jack rabbit and combined cty/hwy is about 20. I put in $10 bucks at a time and drive about 65 mi

The 86 efi Runner I had for a short time averaged 18 on back roads/town(nothing above 40mph), and 24 on the highway.

The last 2nd gen 22re pick-up I rebuilt got 17mpg and 26, the 2 times I drove it.

These results were after short 40-100 mile trips, starting with a full tank, and filling up each time, on premium gas(91 octane).

The highend of 28mpg is from what some members here have claimed. Seeing how the two 80's era 22re's I have had got 24 and 26 on the hwy, the claimed 28 by some isn't all that unlikely.

My '91 22re flatbed got 20mpgs driving to Tahoe loaded with about 400lbs of gear, and managed 17 mpgs on the Rubicon. I was expecting worse since my '90 3.0 averages 11mpg on the trail.

I find I get better mpg filling up after using 1/4 tank than after 3/4.

When I had my 86 4Runner 22re I drove cross country from SoCal to NY I got about 26 mpg adjusted for tire size of course. But I didn't go over 60 mph or so.
