The Panasonic OEM battery (blue ring maintenance free) in my 2000 4Runner has been able to start right up without a hiccup for almost 8 years. I just checked the voltage yesterday when engine and all accessories were off: 12.56 v. I think it is still within spec.
I am so curious about how long it will last. I understand the normal battery life is 3-5 years. What you guys think if I keep it till it fails?

I have a '98 and had the Panasonic battery. I replaced it last year so it was just a bit over 8 yrs. old. You can keep it til it fails, but you might be stranded somewhere. Once mine gave a hint of failing, it started once, maybe twice more before I had to charge it to get to the battery store.

I replaced the battery in my 2002 4runner last weekend. Optima's were off the chart so I went with Autocraft "Titanium" for about $80. The first thing I noticed was that the starter motor spins faster now.

I am not a fan of Optima either. I know Optima is one of the best batteries. However I find it difficult to justify the double extra amount of money more than that of if I spend on regular one. My pick is the Costco "Kirkland" battery with 100 month warranty ($55). I think it would last as long as my stock Panasonic one. Another 8 years?

Mine only lasted 3 years and started going out in a rather nasty way.. Was on a trip out West in some really remote areas..
One time it was start OK, next time the relays were rattling due to very low voltage... back and forth... this is indicative of an internal cell strap bond failing....
I now have dual batteries.. don't trust any single battery if going into remote areas...

The OEM battery in my 82 hilux lasted 11 years, and died only due to a shorted out alternator.

99 4runner purchased new in 98... battery replaced mid 06.
I work from home. Didn't drive the car for a week and the battery was completely dead. So dead that the car alarm didn't even work.

Panasonic in my '93 went almost ten years. Bought the best Diehard I could and it lasted 3years plus one day past its warranty (they gave me a new one anyway). Just goes to show ya.....

the original battery in our '98 4-runner lasted 12 years. Never any problems with vehicle except now the starter contacts need to be replaced. Pretty good for over 200,000 miles.

Well, at least if you're stranded, you live where it's warm! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />
The one in my '99 looks original (2nd owner), so I'll be replacing it this next month. That's the last thing I need failing as a shift worker at -50F. I generally swap them out about every 5 years, given our temp extremes when we need them to crank.
