This case might be of interest--especially if you live in Oregon

Man buys truck on Craigslist.
One year later, axle breaks and truck crashes into another car.
Victim sues not everyone, but the two companies who had previously owned the truck for negligence
Victim wins, all the way up to Oregon Supreme court.

How is this related to the thread? It answers the question--suing is about money. Sue the corporations, not the individual owners, which is why Isuzu is the one getting sued.

Why does this affect you? Ever sell anything that might break, or have been used incorrectly, or been used on something that did break? Ever imagine selling a house and being sued by the 3rd owner, 20 years later?

As the article says:

What can you do to protect yourself? I doubt that your insurance covers it -- at least auto policies end when the vehicle is sold, and I'd be surprised if a standard homeowners policy wouldn't work the same way. There's no way to get a release in advance from everyone who might be hurt by breakdowns of your former stuff while it's in the hands of future owners whom you don't even know.

Great--I can skip that mechanic's inspection in the future! I'll just sue if anything breaks down.
