Roll Me Over
We have certainly beat the visibility vs safety to death. Please note the original smiley--as I keep saying, I am not doubting they make you more visible from the front, just making a small joke about oncoming traffic.

On the Amigo I sold, I put 1" reflective on the front skid plate and A-arms. From more than 10 feet away, it was an extra layer of reflection, if you want to try it. Plus, I picked an accenting color so it looked good, too. Having it on 31.5" tires might have made the underbody more visible, however, in the dark I can't tell if it would work on your vehicle.

Thanks for the name, I looked it up. They make quite a variety, from unit-controlled kits to simple plug-in bulbs.

In my "little bicycle light" (aka diving light) defense, the actual bulb size is a little smaller, but the bigger boost probably comes from power driving the light (one Whelen 4-way strobe kit was 90 watts--much less than an AA battery!) Things such as capacitor charge and flash time also come into play. The diving light is only about once per second, much less than a Whelen box that claims,

...flash patterns available are: CometFlash, DoubleFlash, Rapid Rate, Triple Flash, Micro-Burst II, Micro-Burst III, Modu-Flash, Action Flash, Long Burst, Action Scan.

Either way, the dive light is visible from 3 miles away (per advertisement). Unless you're on the salt flats, that should be good enough for roadside safety use, and as a bonus I can take it with me on dives, bike rides, or motorcycle trips. As a thought, since you're into safety, you might pick up one or two--what would you do if your electrical system is what blew? You couldn't power the lights. But a safety AA powered backup would be handy. Just a thought.

I don't know how new it is, but I just found out about it
a few months ago. They now make a black tape that is very
reflective at night (reflects white). I've put it
on the swingarm of my motorcycle. It blends in perfectly
with black surroundings, so you can't see it during the day,
but it glows like crazy at night.
This is similar to what I have, but this is a kit for a specific bike.
The stuff I got is made by 3M and comes in different widths of tape:

Not quite. A AA-battery only has about 2.5-3 watts output.

Yes, the Whelen box is going to have many more options,
be brighter, and have more flash patterns. After all, I'm
sure it's a little more pricey than a bicycle strobe.

Yep, it would definitely help and be MUCH better than nothing at all.
I have something similar that I keep in my pilon bag on the
motorcycle. It's a small red lens flashing LED.
It's not a strobe, but it's pretty visible, nice and compact, and I think was about $10. I carry two of them.
They run on a CR2032 watch battery.

Yep. I could.
I carry one of these with me at all times, in the truck.

It's powered constantly charged from a power outlet
in the cargo area of the truck, so it's always charged and
ready to go.

I keep a nice big box in the back end of my truck.
There's not much, emergency wise or break-down wise, that
I can't do on the side of the road.
I carry all spare bulbs, fuses, flares, sockets, wrenches,
screw-drivers, gloves, bottle jack, wool microfiber blankets, I have 4 Mag lights in the truck (with orange traffic tubes to put on them), fire extinguisher, and I even carry a small one gallon gas jug (empty of course).
While I'm never completely secure against a break down
and survival, I'm a LOT more ready that most people. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" />

I have that on the back of the Amigo, then I painted over it with gloss. It works great. I also have it on the swing arm of my motorcycle; in fact the whole motorcycle (and helmet) has colored reflective tape on it. Yellow tape on yellow bike; can't see during the day, but it lights up at night.

The 3M tape I get from Galls in the 4" strips, but I have access to a wide strip cutter at work (like a large paper cutter) and can then cut it down to the size I want. That's the way I found to get it cheapest per foot. The price for a 1" strip compared to a 4" strip is outrageous.

Yeah, obviously I got that one bas-ackward.

I've not seen them that small; I've got one that runs on AAA but came to realize I prefer the slightly larger AA's due to longer life. I ride until dark in the mountain park, then come home. I use rechargeables, and I get tired of popping the cases open. Mostly, I'm sure, due to the discharge cycle than the power drain of the LED's.

I feel the same way about my pager. We went to slightly smaller AAA versions....now I'm reprogramming the #$(#@! thing every 2 weeks instead of every 4-6 weeks.

I've got the hyperlights on back, this isn't really what it looks like any more (leatherlykes on it now, new seat, etc), and you can't really see the smiley helmet, but it gives you an idea.

There are a lot of preparations and precautions people could take, but generally don't. And then they sue their car companies when they stop in the middle of the road, get behind heir vehicle, see an approaching vehicle and don't step out of the way.

Well, first, you have excellent taste in bikes and colors!
I love the Magna, awesome bike!
I have the street sign material all over my helmet as well.
Other than the black stuff on the swing arm, I have red
stop sign material on the side of the light bar.
For night riding, I've gone more of the illumination method,
rather than reflective method.
Here's a shot of mine, after I recently installed some lower
driving lights:

Everyone tells me that I look like a freight train coming down the road. LOL

I also have LED's that I run at night and I have the
rear signals setup as driving lights.

Here's a pic of the ones I was talking about:
[Linked Image]
I think I got them at Home Depot or Lowes for about $4/each.
They have a belt clip on the back side and I just keep
them clipped on to the side of my seat bag. At night,
I just turn them on. I've had these on for a little over 2 years and they are still going strong. I had my previous set for about 3 1/2 years before they died. It's cheaper
to buy new ones than it is to replace the battery.

Yep. Me, I choose to be prepared as much as possible.
I realize we can't prepare for everything in every situation,
but there's a lot of normal day to day things
that we can be prepared for and not become a victim of our
own lack of attention and/or preparation...unfortunately, a large number
of people are more concerned about what happened on American
Idol last night vs. things they should be concerned about.

A sad commentary on society.
Moved to PM due to extreme off topicness.
