Getting the Wheeling Fever
So I have tested and replaced almost everything with extra and spare parts. When I Start it its responsive on the gas when you stomp on it and idles great for about 30 to 45 seconds or so and then it goes to hell sputtering and back firing with no response when you try to get on it, but seems to stay running at idle barely. Smells really rich when it goes bad.
Here's what I've tried; new gas, cap, rotor, wires, plugs, o2 sensor, tested TPS, coil, intake, injectors, throttle body, AFM, fuel rail, fuel filter, fuel pump, pulled cold start, vacuum leaks, computer?????????????

Heard it could be the valves??...I have not adjusted them yet.

seems electrical, but I'm out of ideas. Any help would be <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

What year 22RE? ANd check engine light codes stored?

If an earlier 22RE, check the EGR valve and modulator, those may be hooked up incorrectly. EGR modulator gets vacuum once the engine warms up enough to open the BVSV (Bimetal Switching Valve) below the throttle body.

Sounds like a problem with the cold idle circuit. Sorry I do not know the details of this system, but that is where I would start looking.

It's from an 86...check engine has flashed TPS and O2 sensor...I checked both and they're ok. pretty sure the EGR is correct, but I'll double check it.

This one sure has me stumped. I should just build another engine with all the donor parts for god's sake.

Any other thoughts...even brain storming thoughts are welcome.

Also check for air/vacuum leaks between the air filter and throttle body and also any loose vacuum lines or bolts. I had a rough idle on my '85 when I put if back together. Turns out one of the EGR flange bolts was loose and backed out, leaving a big air lead at the back side of the intake plenum. I could not figure out what was wrong, but one evening a buddy dropped by and he pointed out the missing bolt in a minute.

Have you run a compression test on it yet? Id run a cold engine compression test first before starting it. Then warm it up and wait till it misfires/sputters again and try another comp test.

Sounds heat related.. like somethings expanding and losing compression/vacuum, but contracts back again when its cold (much like rogers EGR idea)

definitely check for air leaks - that air pipe that crosses over the radiator can crack underneath when it gets old and is disturbed alot.
But you say it smells rich. This could be due to poor combustion, but it could be due to getting too much fuel. Check your cold start injector - perhaps it is dripping. What happens if you pull its wire?

p.s. It can't hurt to adjust your valves if you have not.

How does it run if you disconnect the TPS? This should put the computer into limp home mode and at least allow it to run.

Have you performed a vacuum test? super easy and you can buy a tester for 10-25 dollers. tells you all kinds of good info.
