Hi all,

I have recently decided to get a battery isolator for my '88. Question I have is that I have a one wire 115Amp chevy alternator ready to replace the anemic stock unit and I was wondering which isolator unit to buy?

I'm looking at a dual batt, 200amp Cole Hersee unit but I'm not sure if the regular 48160 (3 terminal: batt 1, Alt, batt 2) or the 48162 (4 terminals - batt 1, alt, batt 2, ignition) is for me. The 48162 is stated to be for chevy applications that use AC Delco CS series on chevy or GMC that require B+ present at the output terminal.

What the heck is B+ and which one would be best suited for my application? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> Thanks in advance!

Jonathan

B+ is the positive post of the battery.

Some GM alternators are 1-wire units, which require excitatation of the alternator field for the alternator to begin to produce power. That 12v excitation voltage is provided to the alternator through the "Ignition" terminal on those isolator models designed to work with this type of alternator.

From your description, I'd say you need the one with the "Ignition" connection, but check the type of alternator you have and see if it's a "CS" type.
