Getting the Wheeling Fever
I found out today that my engine is an '86, rebuilt 6000 miles ago (pistons, rings, bearings, pump, injectors, etc.) The wrecker I bought it from made a mistake and shipped me this one instead of the '85 with 135,000 miles I thought I was getting. After discussing it with him, he said to just keep it, no point paying shipping back and forth. So, I ended up with a $2600.00 engine for $1400.00

The Ford pressureplate fingers stuck out too far and the Dodge p/p wont bolt up to the Ford flywheel. I tried using the 2.6 flywheel by moving the ring gear ahead so the starter would line up (same ring gear, different starter! ), but there is a step that the gear sits on, (so it just fell off! ) Tried to find a Ford p/p with shallow fingers (only found 15 different ones!, and all stuck out farther ) Thought about building a spacer between the engine and tranny (Oh Good! cant move the pilot bearing back to hit the shaft!!! ) Ok, so truck-1 / me-0 Took Ford flywheel, Dodge pressureplate, clamped them together, threw it at the drillpress, tap, bolt, HA! PERFECT!!!

Now that thats outa the way, all thats left is to build motormounts, build A/C bracket, swap oilpans w/2.6, modify pickup tube, change pullies on P/S pump, A/C, and alternator, find and rig up intake, oil cooler and intercooler, figure out wiring for starting, charging, and guages, clean out gas tank...maybe I'll call the Dodge dealer and see what a new pickup with a Cummins is worth!!!

This is what the clutch setup turned out to be. Ford flywheel, 2.6 gasser D50 pressureplate. I just centered it and drilled it myself (Came within 1/2 thou)
[Linked Image]
Motormounts from 2.6 bolted right up.

Motor is in the truck, all bolted up. Just finishing final touches today (hopefully!)

Well I'm running a lil behind. The ford fan didn't fit. Hits the rad, so picked up a dual electic setup from the wreckers this morning out of a ford contour. Mickey Moused it in (read-rubber tarpstrap!) and had her running by noon. Sure sounds good! Just a little wiring cleanup to do, and that should be it. I think I'll get a different rad and fan assembly though. Chrysler Intrepid rads have a very slim design with dual fans that may make room for an intercooler(building myself). I'm hooking up the fans so that one is for the a/c and one and then both come on for cooling as temp increases. This should only take a handfull of sending units, a dozen relays and 21 miles of wire!
I'll try to get some pics up by Monday.

After 100 miles, everythings runnng good. Here's the final total:

-Motormounts from the 2.6 bolted right up to the diesel (swap frame mounts left/right though)

-Had to drill the Ranger flywheel to take the 2.6 pressureplate. Clutches are identical.

-Swapped oilpans and fabbed new pickup.

-Electric fan from Ford Conquest installed as diesel fan hit 2.6 rad.

-Using Ford sepentine belt setup. Do not use Ford p/s pump, too much pressure, blows seals out of Dodge steering box

-Welded serp pulley to V pump, and 2.6 bracket to diesel brkt.

-Ford 105 amp alternator, (fits fact. bracket and has serp. pulley)

-Installed tranny cooler for engine oil cooler.

-Modified throttle cable end at pump.

-Cut and welded lower rad hose outlet.

-Swapped coolant filler on engine with 2.6 thermostat housing (no thermostat as it is in the lower outlet)

-Cut battery box to make room for vac. pump.

-Glow plugs connected to Ford starter solenoid and push button.

-Feed and return fuel lines hook right up.

-Air filter is K/N style (cone filter on hose) but may have to run air box as the turbo is LOUD!!!

-Elec over vac relay on fenderwell (mine was unhooked?) from 2.6, works well for high idle vac solenoid already on engine, just added a switch on the dash.

-Swapped oil and temp sending units from 2.6.

-Exhaust temporarily stock, straight pipe dual stacks will be on this week.

-Still need to figure out a tach sending unit, Dakota Digital makes one, a lil over $100, so thats probly the route I'll go.

-Need to make a brkt for the A/C, but its 34 below right now, so maybe that can wait

It looks like a lot of MickeyMousing (and it was!) but it turned out great! I can't say as I would definetly do it again, but next time I would put a Ranger engine in a Ranger and a Dodge in a Dodge. Having a complete donor vehicle would be a great help though. I got my engine shipped from a wrecker 500 miles away.

I would not recommend this to anyone that could not do pretty much ALL of the work themselves. I spent over $3000 and did everything myself. To get a lot of the work done outside would end up cost and possibly time prohibitive.

But it was fun anyway

Just wondering if you can post some pictures whenever you get a chance. I would especially like to see the PS setup (although I know it's really hard to see with engine in) and the throttle cable. Also the glow plug system. I was also planning to use a ford style starter solenoid and push button, but I am a little fuzzy on the wiring. I know the two big posts are for batt in and load out, with one of the small posts being for ground (grounded to switch?). What about the fourth? Thanks for your help, and congrats on getting it done so quick!
