Getting the Wheeling Fever
Well, I'm finally taking the plunge. I've got an '89 D50 4x4 with a 2.6 5spd, that I'm dropping in an '85 2.3TD from a Ranger. Just taking the gasser out today, the diesel should be here Tuesday. I'm in Regina Sask. Bought the engine from a wrecker by Edmonton Alberta (sight unseen, but I think I can trust the guy ). Should be a fun project, so I guess I'll have to break out the camera.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Funny thing is I bought this truck 6 months ago with the intention on putting a diesel in it. Looked all over, couldn't find one. Last week the 2.6 started vibrating (not sure what that was yet) but I looked on carpart.com and found the 2.3TD right away. First time I was in the right place at the right time!

Anyone need 2.6 parts? Going cheap (free)

That makes three 2.6 gas to 2.3 diesel conversions under way. There's another thread with a Montero diesel conversion and a Mighty Max as well. Both 4D55T's were pulled from diesel Rangers.

Naw, rear seal on the engine was leaking, that and the vibration was caused by the rear main gone. The guy I bought the truck from said the engine was just rebuilt (aerosol overhaul ) cracked head and all. I should have quit when I was behind... but I went thru 3 heads (plus $70 head bolts each time ) from the the wreckers before finally sealing the last one with Irontite. I did buy a brand new head(not reman) w/new valves installed, 3 weeks ago, but didn't get a chance to put it on . Looks all pretty and shiny sittin on the shelf!

Well the diesel showed up yesterday. Looks pretty good! I guess the fun(expense) now starts. I picked up a new pressure plate, pilot bearing, thowout bearing and clutch for the D50 to replace the Ford. Now I have to round up some serpentine pullies for the A/C, Dodge Alt, and P/S pump. Due to lack of available parts, I'll fab up some motor mounts, A/C bracket and exhaust. Have to hit the local wreckers for an intake of some sort and swap out the oilpan with the old 2.6

I sure hope this is worth it in the end. The expense list is growing
Engine-$1400
Shipping-$151
Clutch, P/P-$167
Engine crane-$170 (sold mine a couple years ago after swearing I was done swapping engines in old trucks! )
New Lincoln Mig-$499 on sale from $749 (just my luck, someone stole my other one over the weekend, right before I needed it for this project )
Let's see...The truck was $2700 6 mths ago
New tires-$400
Heads, gaskets, bolts (3 before I found one without a crack!)-$250
Sceamin Deal on brand new head w/valves-$250 (these suckers retail for $585 w/out valves but never I never got a chance to install it)
I'll put a new water pump, starter and alt on it if this things actually runs, just because I'm gettin good at blowin money on stuff I don't really need.

So far $6000, give or take, on an 18 year old truck ...and counting

At least I won't have to as myself "What was I THINKING" The answer is obvious...
"I WASNT!!!"

Oh well, it's probably only half what I'll have to spend to appease the wife-gods when she finds out...

I wonder if anybody can look into a front 1/2 cut pajero or something with a 4D56...1/2 cut cars start around $2000 and go up from there depending on what it is, If you could find a 1/2 cut pajero diesel from japan, it might work out around the same price...everything you'll need will be there
