This is the way to go for sure. Don't even bother hitting the studs. Hit the hub itself while the nut it stiill on a few threads. Spin the hub around and hit it all on all sides. The cones will pop out. Heck, I don't even use a brass drift to hit the hub. Just whack away. When you put them back in, coat them with some anti-seize or just plain grease to make them easier to remove next time.
