Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hi guys, I've got an 84 toyo with a 22r. I've dug around in the arcives, not seen anything specific on this problem.

I put a radiator cap with a temp gauge on it, see here I've got a new radiator, hoses, etc...on my truck after rebuilding the top end.

My truck runs at about 190' for normal operating temp, the in cab gauge reads about just below the halfway mark.
I've noticed that after running at normal temp and I turn the engine off the temp gauge on the radiator slowly goes up goes up to 210+' before it cools down. If I turn on the ignition the in cab gauge reads about at the halfway mark, normal temp.

If I let the truck idle for several minutes before turning it off it will stay at 190' and cool down from there.
The hoses feel very "pressurized" at 210' temp, I'm afraid I'm gonna blow a hose or something....

Is this normal? I'm thinking of an electric fan with a thermostat that will cool the engine down for a while after I shut it down.. I'm looking at one of these here with a painless wiring set up.

What say you?

Residual heat in the engine block and head transfers to the coolant when you shut the engine off.

>>>*Perfectly normal. The oil temperature runs around 20-30 degrees higher than the water temperature, give or take a tad..

Some of that heat transfers to the cooling system when the engine is shut off....*EB

your coolant temp will be the hottest about 5 minutes after shutting you vehicle off., no coolant circulating and no air on your radiator

I run an electric fan that normally will run shortly after shutdown.

Thanks for the replies. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

My ISP is a bit spotty just now, so I'm using the wireless network at the local library.

Whew...I'm glad to hear that this is normal, I just rebuilt the top end a few months ago and I'm really not thrilled at the prospect of digging into it again any time soon.

When I had an electric fan in my '85, it would kick on some times after shutting it down. My old gas engine VW (front wheel drive) electric fan (stock) would also kick on quite frequently after shutting off the engine. Interestingly on my diesel VW, I have never had the engine fan kick on after shutting off the engine. Since you are typically driving fairly slow and at light engine loads before stopping, the diesel engine must cool down quite a bit while a gas engine tends to stay hotter under those conditions.
