When I had an electric fan in my '85, it would kick on some times after shutting it down. My old gas engine VW (front wheel drive) electric fan (stock) would also kick on quite frequently after shutting off the engine. Interestingly on my diesel VW, I have never had the engine fan kick on after shutting off the engine. Since you are typically driving fairly slow and at light engine loads before stopping, the diesel engine must cool down quite a bit while a gas engine tends to stay hotter under those conditions.
