Check the clearance of the oil pan. Other than that, should be the same. If the oil pan is too close, you'll need to change the pickup tube as well.

x 2 on what Todd mentioned, as usually a 22Rx from a 2wd donor into a 4wd rig takes the 4wd oil sump and pan to make it work. And on the dipstick tube, there will be an inch of difference (eg, 22R in Celicas), so make sure you check.
Give the engine mounts a good look too, esp if the 4wd is >'83, due to frame differences.
If you do not have vacuum diagrams, make sure you mark stuff.

What's it going into, aside from a 4wd? You've got 3 tranny choices. Also check our Toyota FAQ in the header above for tranny info.

Because i don't know, do i have to worry about a spline # difference between the 4WD tranny and the 2WD motor? If there is how do i fix this issue? Now you've got me worried..... The splines on the tranny mesh with the clutch disc, not the engine. *IF* there is a difference, the worst case is you might need to figure out if the 4wd clutch disc will work with the 2wd flywheel/pressure plate, or if the 4wd flywheel will bolt to the 2wd crankshaft. It's almost certainly do-able, afraid I have no info on what hoops you may need to jump through... Dave

In that case too, a parts lookup would be a good idea to check interchangeability.

Pretty much new to any major work (ie. replacing the motor) in general. Thats why I came to this forum to get help and ideas from people who know what they're talking about. So thanks to all who contributed with your experience and knowledge!!! I'll let yall know how things go. Stock L43 as far as I can tell. The motor is coming as a package deal and am getting another L43 and not sure which 5 speed manual. Might have one big swap on my hands here if I can get the info about the 5 speed. Or maybe it'll get posted for sale on the forum for any of my NOR*CAL neighbors.
