So how many speakers does a Pajero have and are they decent sounding or will I need to replace them? Also, if this is the case, what are the sizes? Are they the same location and size as the Montero?

my stereo sounds awesome...I'm not sure what size the back speakers are but the 4 fronts are:

2 4" in the bottom of the dash
2 5.25" in doors
the back speakers I think are 6.5"

I know my 2 4" speakers in the dash were replaced in japan with some aftermarket ones, not the greatest but sounds decent.

I am pleased with the way it sounds though. I put a Phoenix Gold 12" sub in it.

Shorty only has em in the dash, no door speakers, but the OE dash ones are crap - replaced em with some good ones (as good as you can get for a teeny tiny 4"). Back ones are oe mitsu speakers, vintage early 90s, so-so, I replaced em with 6 1/2" Alpine . Its a lot of fun getting into the back speakers - entire plastic side garnish (covering half the interior) has to be either removed, or carefully convinced to bend out of the way - don't put em in on a cold day unless you like the sound of snapping plastic...

You're more than welcome to come and have a look, but of course mine is the shorty, and I believe you're lusting after the limo version.

yah it didn't look like the rears are going to be fun to change....mine sounds pretty good though, maybe they have been replaced already on mine. I'd say, if they aren't blown, don't change them hahaha.

Be carefull when replacing your front speakers. They are wired in parrallel. The 4' ones in the dash are 8ohm (I pulled mine last week) and It's likely the doors are 8ohm too. They are 8ohm so the head unit sees a 4 ohm load.

If you replace the speakers with standard 4ohm aftermarket speakers, the head unit will see only 2 ohms, which can cause the tiny amp in the head unit to overheat due to greater current draw.

You can take a chance that your head unit will be fine (2 ohm stable) or you can do away with the 4" speakers and go with just s good set in the doors. One other option is to use a 4channel amp to power all four.

I am going to head up and see this thig, I just have to get up to Airdrie. About three months ago seemed that's always where I was, now not so much. Anyway, thanks for all of the info. I am going to see what kind of stereo packages are out there.

Where did you mount the Sub??? I am not a big stereo guy like my old highschool days anymore. I really don't want the big sub box intruding into the passenger area, plus need to keep the back free for the dog. As for the front dash speakers, If they are 4ohm and you replace the deck, could you not just run new wire to the front speakers from the deck and connect the rest of the speakers using the wiring harness?

So the tally of speakers then is 6 for the "limo version". 6 1/2 in the back, 5 1/4 front doors and 4 in the dash?? OK, Im off to see what kinda deal I can get. I travel so much I need a good stereo, I am driving around in my 1987 Nissan "dentra" and its killing me here with the crackles and pops haha.

A sub in an SUV will always intrude on space. I don't bother with big bass anymore, I just buy speakers that do the job for my ears.

I don't think you understand, it isn't an issue of rewiring anything. The head unit (stock or aftermarket) has four outputs. RightFront, Left Front, RightRear, and LeftRear. The Pajero has 6 speakers, running 4 off the Front channel. In order to run the "extra" pair without adding wiring and an amp or a strange custom head unit, Mitsubishi used 8-ohm speakers in the front dash and doors. These speakers are wired in parallel in order to maintain a standard 4-ohm load on the head unit.

If you replace the 8ohm speakers in the dash and doors with 4ohm ones, the total load drops to 2ohms. (total resistance is an inverse sum in a parallel circuit.)

The result, according to Ohm's law, is that in order to maintain 12V at the new lower resistance, more current (and heat) is produced by your amplifier inside the head unit.

Your head unit might handle it, might not. The right way to do it is to either:

* cut out the extra pair.
* Find some aftermarket 8ohm speakers (home audio is usually 8ohm)
* Wire in a 4-channel amp

There might be other solutions, like just going to a component set with the mids in the doors and the tweeters in the dash location. Or re-wiring some high-end 2ohm speakers in series (which I understand might sound bad.)

Anyway, personally I'm going to my door speakers with standard 4-ohm ones and see how that goes. I just thought you should know the risks! Oh yeah, I've also read that 6 1/2" speakers fit the doors. I just bought a set of shallow-mount Infinities to replace my blown door speakers. Good luck.

You nailed it...I didn't understand haha. I got it now. Actually the component speaker may be a good option then. Component speakers are always a problem to mount I find unless you have the OE slots for them; they never look right. That would also cut down on costs and probably sound just as nice or better. So shallow mount speakers in the door. I am assuming that is an issue? I know I had some after market JVCs in my Rodeo and bought some nice Alpine Compnent speakers that were much deeper. I had to shave the inside of the factory grills to make just enough room for the new units. I wish I had known they were shallow mounts before I bought them, would have saved me some work.

yea..the 4" speakers in the dash are pretty much useless anyway...it is the dumbest position to have speakers to begin with. the 5.25" in the doors are where you want to upgrade...keep only those and it will sounds awesome still.

great thanks. Are the one speakers in the dash the type that are positioned facing down towards your knees?
