I hadn't thought about the filters horizontal mounting position and the way it drains all it's oil after shutdown, having read all this good input I think I'll stick with the stock size filter after all, thanks everyone.

I hadn't thought about the filters horizontal mounting position and the way it drains all it's oil after shutdown, having read all this good input I think I'll stick with the stock size filter after all, thanks everyone. if you buy a good filter such as a K&N, a purolator/valvoline, or a OEM, it will not let down all it's oil. Sorry but i disagree with the other posters that a larger filter will ruin your engine. All it does, it give extra capactity with more filtering media. How about those dual oil filter relocation kits? i dont see those blowing up engines.

now now .. I didnt say the engine would blow up  I just said it prematurly wears the chain . and as for the duel filters .. they are mounted vertically , and never drain . therefore not needing to fill to build pressure . when you just screw a filter onto the existing mount .. the filter will drain , and need to be filled on start up .. as I mentioned .. it's only mili seconds .. but as we know , most of the damage to an engine is done on initial start up , why help it ? stick with the small filter .

Its seems to me that if you change your oil when it needs it (e.g. when it's just starting to get dirty), then the size/filtration properties of the filter are irrelevant. Att hat point, it's finished doing its job. Maybe a bigger filter buys you 500 extra miles? Big deal.
Re: the oil spilling back out of teh filter when you take it off... does the OE toy filter not have an anti-drainback valve in it? I thought it did - but the last time I replaced min, it did indeed spill back out. I use the same Toyota dealership OE filter on my wife's Saturn too (since it matches the 3614 - and BOY does that make the Saturn guys crazy, hahaha) and sometimes it drain, sometimes not.

But on my last, hrm 4 or 5 oil changes i've done in both my 3.0 and 3.4, i've noticed the filter is still full of oil, and that the anti-drainback valve is working correctly. I agree, that if you get a cheap filter, there is none, or there is a crappy anti-drainback valve, but in the premium filters, there is a valve (guess it's kinda like a check valve) that keeps oil in it at all times. Plus... my engines dont have chains <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/drunk.gif" alt="" />. Lol but still, if it's a good filter, even at the 30 degree angle or w/e toyota mounts it at, it wont drop all it's oil into the crankcase when it's shut off. Check for this next time you do an oil change.

the toyota oil filter for your truck is a "D1" all 95-to present tacos (4cyl and 6cyl) use the same thing, toyota 4.7 V8 use a "D3", same width just a bit taller/longer.

I have run across the NAPA GOLD FILTER #1773, it is a larger filter by quite a bit. I use this one just to get a little more oil capacity you still dont get more miles out of it just because you got more, I can get 5 qts. in now with this filter. I done this because i was travling the interstates and one thing i did notice, only because i had a mechanical oil pressure gauge hooked up, when ever i made some hard turn that my oil pressure would actually drop, hence the oil moved away from the pick-up tube momentarly, I would think that something like that would do more harm than the intial start up in the morning seeing how my truck takes several revolutions to hit anyway, building pressure then. Go onto the Baldwin filter site and look up the specifications for your oem filter. Then go to their catalog and look up the various filters with the same threading, roughly the same gasket dimensions, and similar values for the pressure relief and such.
There's several hundred filters that will physically fit, and about 40-60 that fit and work well.
Personally, I tend to standardize my vehicles filters so I can just store one type on the shelf, not half a dozen different ones.
