Don, just like Fred said, try not to let it bother ya. I took some serious hard knocks when I first started posting (and still do occaisonally) but I have found that overall the folks here are good. I try very hard to not swap insults. Some of the comments here were off base and the poster had misread what you stated on your website. From what I have seen, yer not sayin yer way is the best nor is it the only way, its just the way you did it to yours. I thought yer fabbing of the CAI was neet even if I am not gonna do it to mine. It would give someone who decides he wants to mod his ride ideas on how to do his own and maybe save some bucks in the process. Face it, if someone decides to mod something, he's gonna do it no matter what others advise him to do or whether its bad for his ride or not. I do believe that having cooler air entering yer engine is better for performance. There are very few places on a Jeep that allow this to happen and any filter that is exposed is likely to suck something up your pride and joy will not digest well. IMHO Cold Air Intakes have no place off road at all for this reason. And I do actually have an open chrome air filter assembly sitting on top of my 304. But come huntin season and when I know I am goin into wet, soupy, or overly dusty environs, the stock assembly will go back on. The only way I see your Jeep getting honest cold air is with a cowl induction of some kind or maybe a snorkel. AMC-DC has done the best it could short of that. Using the headlight bucket area sans bezel as an induction port was a pretty good idea except at night with the headlight burning maybe, lol. I understand painting the area black was to help with aesthetics after removing the bezel, not to improve air flow. I would have used screamin red or sonic blue if that was the case Anyway, I found your website informative and nicely done. We welcome you to the board and keep the info coming, just dont try to promote something you are selling on this forum, there is another place for that on this site. Take care!

Thank you...got nothing for sale here, just a retired old geezer who after 40+ years of Jeeps is not getting to spend quality time working on it.

Not sure when you were last at the site but I just posted the pics and write up of "Part II (same page).

Lots of folks encounter cooling issues. I live out in the desert and when I moved here from Dallas several years ago I thought I knew hot! They KNOW HOT out here. Toss in a Jeep with AC and a supercharger that is passing HOT engine oil thru the SC and back down into the pan and in from of my AC/radiator I also have a intercooler.

Albeit my Jeep NEVER overheated it did run the ragged edge of being too hot and leaving little margin for getting much hotter.

I worked to solve the problem and was able to do so using OEM parts. BUT what I could not solve was my problem with pre-detonation. And in the hottest time of the year I had pre-det at any speed above about 45. In fact I could not even drive on the freeway with 91-92 octane fuel.

What I knew was I needed a cooler air charge to the engine. Trying lots of approaches I finally solved it.

Install Chrysler LeBaron hood vents

Removed headlight trim rings

Install OEM 7 blade fan and HD clutch

This solved my heat and pre-det issues, even when hauling my M101 military trailer at highway speeds.

But I knew I had found something with getting the engine bay cooler which resulted in a normal temp running engine and a BETTER running engine...NO pre-det!

I then spent a lot of time researching various air intake systems looking for a way to get direct outside air into the intake with out the drawbacks.

The opening paragraphs of the web page 2-3 describe what I discovered. This lead to fabbing up a "box" that I could mold to fit behind the headlight bucket. I picked a "Trash can" because of its cost and mold-ability.

I now run 87 octane year round, something the SC folks will say you cannot do. Why can I? Cooler outside air down the throat of the intake system. And I have a better running Jeep to boot.

I know it works because it is about the same as the OEM system Jeep has used...ref: para 2-3 of the aforementioned webpage on "Trash Air"

Had a few folks on here bothered to read those 2 very short paragraphs and look at the pics, they too would have known

LOL thanks for the comments.

HEY, you think that after dropping $5k on a SC I got ducats left over for anything fancy? Did you see how I raised my Jeep seats or keep my console and floorboards cooler from the heat...can you say low-buck:

I checked out the link of your writeup from the first post and quickly looked at the pictures on the right hand side to see what you had done. I then read the text to see the specifics of the installation.

I have to admit, I didn't see the supercharger until you mentioned it. I then went back and sure enough it was there. Its not the easiest thing to see unless your looking for it.

Hey Savage, do you have an oil cooler on that rig? That would help dramatically in enigne heat reduction. Almost necesary with boost.

Hey Jamie, it was not the focal point of the post and I certainly did not mention it...the focus was how do I get some cooler air into the intake. It does get hot here, it was 93 yesterday...but its a dry heat

No, I don't and yep, you are right on that, I have looked at them at lot and am going back and forth between installing one and going with a sealed SC unit...I'll post something in the future on this.

I go deeper into the definitions (see below). Hangers on, err maybe, how about peanut gallery?

To act as a shill.
v.tr.
1. To act as a shill for (a deceitful enterprise).
2. To lure (a person) into a swindle.

Noun 1. shill - a decoy who acts as an enthusiastic customer in order to stimulate the participation of others
decoy, steerer - a beguiler who leads someone into danger (usually as part of a plot)
Verb 1. shill - act as a shill; "The shill bid for the expensive carpet during the auction in order to drive the price up"
cozen, deceive, delude, lead on - be false to; be dishonest with [color:"blue"]

all in all I enjoyed you writeups, they are interesting and imformitive. However wouldnt use a K@N filter due to the oil coating,I know what that did to my regular tb,ias and so on. I would hate to see what it could do to a $5k unit. I remember from the box it did say the holes was larger to allow more air(miniscule to our eyes),but still It does allow more fine dirt and the coating to make its way in.I know arizona has pleanty of dust. I also remember that it said that the dirtier it gets the better it works. Which leaves me to wonder why use a filter that works better when dirty, than a filter that has about the same restricion in the first place.
I was thinking maybe try one of the large cone filters from a ford truck, or the cyl. shaped ones from the chevy trailblazer. that would be interesting to see a comparison on those 3 filters. As I said good write ups just something that I wouldn't do.

Just for referance reasons I been through all sorts of conditions with the jeep in VA when I lived there dry, dusty, muddy,&snow I finally trashed my K@N when I moved to jersey because I got tired of removing the TB to clean it

out of all the jeeps in this town the d**n gremlin had to invade mine

I've done so much, with so little for so long i can practicly do anything with nothing

Thank you

That is not K&N, it is some other brand as I remember. It is a K&N filter sock which I use out here in the desert due to the fine dust that gets kicked up as you drive.

But as of yesterday I have left the cone filter completely behind and gone to a Purlator in the OEM air box.
