I am thinking about having my 85 yota shipped from my house in northern california all the way to New Port, Rhode Island where i am going to shool. However my truck already has rust and i really don't want it to get any more. what are things i can do and measures i can take to keep it from rusting even more on the east coast.

don't bring it to the east coast...haha

If you absolutely don't need it, or don't want to spend the money on professional undercoating, and deal with all the rust related issues associated with running a vehicle in a rust prone region, leave it here in CA. It would be nice to have it back there, but it would be wiser to buy one out there than ship yours back.

No but seriously What are measures I can take to prevent rust. It is only going to be here for 8 monthes but i really want to bring it over.

I've read somewhere that spraying the whole underside with oil before the snow season works great at preventing rust and spraying off the salt, but probably a bit messy...and finding oil leaks will be a lot harder. Never tried it myself but sounds viable.

Get a big wire brush and knock all the loose stuff off you can. Then pressure wash as best you can, let it dry for a few day and start painting........with this......

Posted this before but.....I am in salt central, Western NY. My 93 T has no rust, even after a year and a half here. Came from the Boston area. Clean off the undersides as best as possible. Pressure washer is good, a good car wash that has a strong under body sprayer works as well. Any scale style rust needs to be scraped / brushed off and hit with rustoleun style paint. Then the magic touch. WD40. I have used a Wagner power sprayer with the flex tip with much success. Don't be shy with coverage. Make it drip. And just this week I saw in the local Lowe's that WD40 now comes in a spray can that has a wide spray - fog style top. Anyway you do it, get er wet. Park on a gravel drive or on dirt for a couple of days to let the residual drip off.

When I wash the truck, I make sure to spray under the edges of the box panels and to get all the crud out. And watch the bottom corner of the front fenders. They like to gather leaves, then dirt, then rust. Even this week, when I touch the inside of the body panels they still feel like the WD40 is on them. Another application to be done in the next week.

Did this on my old 2wd 93T with much success as well.

ps. the box bed likes to rust between the bed and the sideways support channels underneath. Make sure to soak them. Especially the ends of the channels that are just in front and behind the wheel wells. First spot to rust.

Anyway, goober her up. If you are transporting, do it befire shipping and let it "dry" up while trucking it east.
