Getting the Wheeling Fever
I've been posting alot lately, but you guys really help. I love this site. Anyway, I recently replaced my timing chain etc. in my '85 4runner 22re, and it quieted the motor down alot. Now I'm on a preventative maintainence kick, and I noticed that the rocker arms are pretty clanky during first start up and at general warm idle. I am thinking about adjusting my valves. I noticed there was some play in the rockers when I had the motor a TDC. I was wondering, the rockers slide on the shaft probably more than they should I'm sure they're pretty worn, will adjusting valves with worn rockers do more harm than good, or should I just be satisfied that it runs good (but chattery) now and leave them alone untill I decide to buy new? thanks.

Valve Adjust

Screwdriver, 10mm wrench, angled feeler gauge(fits better than a straight one).

If doing it cold instead of warm, set them up with a heavy drag.

Make sure the rear half moon seal is still in place when you drop the cover back on! Makes a helluva mess if'n ya don't.

The valve adjustment screws are concave, and wear flat spots in them; easy enough to replace. Part number is listed in the part number sticky.

That should get you started; just look for signs of wear.

Cool if it is; it's been awhile. Guess I've got clutch cylinder on the brain.

Thanks guys. That should stop the chattering and perhaps make the engine a little more responsive? I'll do it on saturday. I already bought the straight feelers. damn it!

If ya have the receipt, just exchange 'em. You can still do it with the straight set, but the angled ones make it so much easier to do.
