So.... I rebuilt the 22R-EB last year and have around 10K since then... new crank, rods, .030 over pistons, new EB RV head, cam, ARP studs, yada, yada... I checked my oil today and was a couple of quarts low, kinda wierd... got home, let it cool off and just started looking around under the hood... opened the rad cap.. nice and full. Opened the overflow bottle and was surprised to see nothing but black sludge... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" /> easily a quart... no trace of water in the oil (that I can see), no milkshake under the oil cap, no white smoke, no gurgling sound from the heater. It runs great, doesn't overheat... What gives? Anyone ever heard of this b4?

Did you by chance replace the timing cover or chain guides when you rebuilt? It may be worth your time to pull the T-stat and check for a hole in the timing cover underneath.

Sounds like your oil pressure is good. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> I'd first suspect any gasket that has both coolant and pressurized oil routed through it. You could also have a corrosion hole between a high pressure oil line and a coolant area.

Yes.... new timing cover, steel backed guides, tensioner, chain, oil pump, etc... dangit...

It is possible the gasket itself breached for some reason, there is a pressurized oil galley that runs pretty close and can leak oil into the coolant.

Typically that would be a chocolate milk color, though, not black. I would dump the coolant recovery bottle and wait, because if you have that much oil in there it should show in the crankcase on on the filler cap for sure.

Run her for awhile that way and see if it keeps coming, watch the oil level, too. Holler if you think you need a cover, 3 year warrenty on those....*EB

Little tip on inspecting that cover. If you have some kind of solvent laying around, pour a little into the cover and very slowly work it around. If there's any cracks not visible to the naked eye, the solvent will find it.
