Thanks for the advice all, in the end I bit the bullet and had the original rad. recored. I did look at fitting one of the jegs al. radiators in, and it would have required a good amount of time I didn't have. The radiator needs to be modified - no way around it. The lower right inlet is aimed straight into the timing belt cover. I don't think that even by modifying the front metal as mentioned by jerry above that you could get enough clearance to fit an elbow in there. it wouldn't be too expensive, but it would have cost me about a week of time waiting to get it to and from the welder.
