well, the other day the cj started kinda loping. it idles but feels like its dropping a cylinder. the whole thing is shaking and vibrating at idle and increases as the rpm's start to climb, then smooths out as it gets in the power band. funny thing is im not really noticing a loss of power. I threw a timing light on all plug wires and each is firing. Timing is at 8 degrees. I have noticed a tiny bit of coolant seeping up in the groove where the manifold gasket makes a little dam against the head. Would a blown head gasket cause this? any ideas would be appreciated.
I might just drop it off at a shop and get it checked out.
Fred, Josh, you guys know any good jeep guys in Junction?
I haven't pulled the plugs yet.

Pull the plugs, look at them close.
Head gasket not real likely without causing lots of smoke.
Compression and leak down next.
Still could be ignition, pull the cap and see if there are cracks or lines that look like crack in the cap between terminals or ground.

Sure is a good description of a burnt intake valve.. The more rpm the less the leak is noticed.. I'd bet a leak down will find the problem..

I drove it again at lunch and it seems to be hitting on all cylinders, but it just seems really out of balance until it spins up.
Thanks

Jim
I will buy one of those compression testers and check it this weekend. Thanks for the advice.

Josh you can tart the vehicle with one of the plug wires off over and over till you get thru all of them If it is a valve you should be able to tell which cylinder it is thataway..
BTW I always have my wife take the wires off while I start the vehicle.. just to make sure..

Jim, you make your wife pull the 60k volt plug wires off while running? Nice.
