Reagan

1) Because I was in the military through all his presidency but his first year in office and he did a lot to boost us up.

2) He gave the country a real economic "shot-in-the-arm" that was felt through the Clinton years.

3) He squarely looked the Soviets in the eye and didn't back down at all.

4) His Star Wars bluff had the Soviets fooled and was something they couldn't economically compete with, which helped bring them down.

5) I met him in 1984.

His greatest quality and what we, as a nation, needed most was his optimism. His belief that the people, not the government, made this country great.

The situation leading up to his election...the Carter malaise, the inflation rate (13%), mortgage rates as high as 22%, the impotence we felt as a nation...made him the only one who could lead us away from self destruction.

Today we face similar forces...we are on the verge of socialism, we are divided one against the other, the foundations of American culture are under fire...from within.

This up coming presidential election, as much as the 1980 election, is one of the most important in our history.

I know we can be brought down because of intrusive government that kills the American spirit...but, I believe we can overcome our dependence on government, reduce the size and influence of the government, re-learn personal responsibility and re-gain personal freedom.

I would rather suffer the consequences of a Conservative?s error, than suffer the consequences of a Socialist's intent.

George Bush because he enlightened so many to the flagrant BS that flows from Washington DC. Without him many of us would have thought our country was just fine.

Thanks for the wake up call Dubya.

Lincoln.

Back to a simplier time when Presidents actually had honor, dignity and weren't owned by the rich and powerful.

Lincoln, also.

No President to this day has had to endure what he did and make the decisions he did, even GWB, the great 'Decider'.

I doubt many would have the strength and resilience to.

I was going to say Andrew Jackson AKA "Old Hickory" simply because of his military record, leading the fight against the national bank, representing the common American and general defiance against tyranny but he was a slave owner so..... Who knows how he treated them. Its kind of hard to swallow the whole rallying for inalienable rights while owning a person.

Maybe Lincoln is a better choice simply for the fact that there was some action with protecting civil rights while protecting a fledgling union.

In my day I'd have to say Reagan simply because I think he really did love America and cared about the peace and freedom of the world. He was forced to do some stupid things by the puppet masters but he was quoted as saying he is concerned about the future of this country by internal take over. Reagan learned how our government really worked and I think it scared the crap out of him. He did what he did best and that was speak to the American people and make us feel warm and cozy.

Reagan was a natural at diplomacy he also knew when to turn it up a notch and when NOT to. He was very outspoken about the Berlin wall coming down and thats great but honestly the Soviets were doomed anyway.

I think that every president should have PHD in some sort of presidential research and training. He would have to know every presidents trials and tribulations and how they affected the people of the US and relationships with other countries. He shoul dhave to take an exam simular to the BAR. This way the position of the presidency would be inteligently evovlving and no research would be lost.

Jeez...what would would that country be like?
