in 2nd gear? limp mode starts you off in 3rd gear if you are in D drive. you can shift manually, however. the cause for the computer to put the autom trans into limp mode is often electrical/electronic, and very often the charging system, and usually the alternator but can also be the battery, terminal connectors, wires and grounds. but can be other things. sometimes just shutting the car off and restarting makes the problem go away in my experience.

can you shift manually? are you actually in 3rd not 2nd when you take off in Drive?
