Gen II 3.0L or 3.5L? I'm not 100% sure but I would think the 3.5L rear axles are bigger than the 3.0L axles since the rear R&P's are also bigger in the 3.5L.


The gen 3's have same size rear ring and pinion. The axle stubs are the same diameter as the gen 2 3.5L. But the Gen 3 stubs have more splines and thus are considered stronger.

Not sure how strong the CV's are, but they are massive and since the rear does not have to turn, the angles are not asking them to do as much as front outer CV. CV Axle shafts themselves are pretty thick as well..It might not be a flex machine but the drive train of the gen 3 is pretty stout in the tradition of the earlier Monteros.
