I have a toe in adjustment calling for 0-.08 of an inch positive, but I'm not sure how much that is. can anyone tell me ? is that like an eighth of an inch ? and what does it mean by "positive" ? I was a little confused by the term "positive" since I assumed "Toe In" meant the measurment taken at the front of the wheels would be lesser than at the rear of the wheels. As for the 0-.08 measurment, is this the same formula where .25 of an inch is equal to a 1/4 of an inch ? in which case .08 would be approx a 32nd of an inch.
Thanks in advance.

1/16"=4/64'=.0625" 5/64"=.078125" 3/32"=6/64'=.09375"
Good luck trying to measure that unless you have an alignment rack at your disposal <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />
I don't do alignments, so have no idea on the positive/negative question.

If you search on alignment here and on Yotatech you will find lots of info on doing your own alignment. It is easy. The toe in spec is anywhere from 0" to 3/32 (.09375") per wheel. Total max toe is combined is then 3/16" slightly less than 1/4". Take a string and run it around the front wheel and hold it up next the rear wheel. Use a ruler or tape measure to see if it is aligned to the rear wheel. I needs to be either aligned or angled slightly, meaning less that 1/8? difference on the tape measure. After adjusting, role the truck back and forth keeping the steering wheel centered. You won't believe how good this method is for centering the wheel. There's nothing like setting the alignment on the roads the truck actually drives. Frank

Wear patterns will tell you right away if the toe in setting is off..
To zero the toe in where I want it, I pull off the side of the road, put a strip of masking tape accross the tread of the tires, pull back on the road using the least amount of turning to not scrub the tape off, and then drive for about 10 miles... and pull back off the road in an area where very little turning is required.
The masking tape wear will show you right away (assuming other front end geometry is correct)... and I walk the toe in accordingly... You can actually see the wear pattern walk up one side of the edge of the tread very slightly on one side or the other, telling you if it's toe'd in or out... The wear across the thread will be consistent e.g. if toe'd in too much more wear on the outer portion of the thread or, vice versa..
I've also seen if the toe in is off badly AND driving on a road with a lot of crown, the left front tire will be tend to be running straight on, and the right side tire wear showing that the tire is being dragged sidesways a considerable amount, i.e. to keep the vehicle going straight on a high crown of the road, you effectively are turning left slightly and putting all the toe in on the right front tire. It wears a lot faster...

That sounds like a good check for toe in. All I can add is to make sure your camber is vertical so you don't trick your self into thinking the tires are toeing one way or the other when in fact they are just leaning that way.

Thanks everyone, since this old beast has over 300.000 km on the clock I thought I would set the toe in on the fat side at 3/32nd". which I've been told is .09375". plenty tight enough considering the worn rack end I just replaced resulted in 1/2 to 3/4" of slack at the right front wheel.
The following measurments are from this same post made at another site and may be useful on this subject.
1/16" = 4/64" = .0625"
5/64" = .078125"
3/32" = 6/64" = .09375
