Need a Spot
I know it is a CV axle, but I'm not sure if it is the boot or the whole axle. When I put my rig in 4WD, it makes a tick tick tick tick tick sound. It does not make it when it is in 2WD. It is only on the drivers side.

How can I tell if it is just a boot or the whole axle which needs replaced?

Roll Me Over
A torn boot doesn't mean noise. It is just a rubber piece that seals out dirt, etc. However, if the boot is torn, it may let contaminants into the joint and then you will get wear or damage which may be indicated by noise.

So the bad news is that if there is ticking it isn't caused by a torn boot, but the torn boot may have led to other damage.

So it looks as if I'll be changing out a CV axle <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Automatic locking hubs sometimes make a ticking noise while the vehicle is in 4WD and rolling forward. Do you have auto or manual hubs?

Buy a Trooper. You'll be glad you did.
