The NP 231 will have 2HI, 4HI, N, 4LO. This will allow you to only use 4WD when you Need it, instead of spinning all the drivetrain all the time. With All Wheel Drive, the transfer case has to have a differential in it too, to allow for the different movement between the front and rear end when turning. ItÆs just one more thing to go wrong.

This one has part time 4w, 4w high and 4w low. I wouldn't be interested if it didn't have a low end xfer case. Is this the best one you were talking about? Just wondering, is that supposed to say "2w, 4w high and 4w low." Or are they all supposed to be 4s?

the t-case shifter has 5 selections? I dont know about that then, that seems strange, but I'm fairly new to the hobby, so there is a lot i have not seen.

There's not really 5 is there?
There should only be 4L, N, 2H, 4H. Being able to shift it into 2WD makes it a part time transfer case...meaning that it does not have full time 4WD, so there should not be a "part time 4WD setting" on the t-case shifter. I'm betting there is actually only 4 settings.

It sounds to me like this jeep has the NP242 "Selec Trac" Transfer case in it, which has a shift pattern of 2WD, 4WD Part Time, 4WD Fulltime (AKA All Wheel Drive), N, 4WD Low. It has the center differential in it. To me itÆs just one more thing to go wrong. Personally I looked long and hard to find my Jeep up here with the 4.0L, AX15 5 speed and the NP231, but then I think I saw ~50 Automatic XJ's for each Manual transmission XJ.

Some Cherokees, Libertys and Grands have the NP242 transfer case which has part time and full time 4WD combined in one transfer case (just to muddy the waters ). I can't recall the gear order exactly: but, the NP242 includes 2 wheel drive, full time 4 wheel drive, a real neutral, and part time 4 wheel drive high, and part time 4 wheel drive low modes of operation. full time 4 wheel drive is basically all-wheel drive, allowing the vehicle to be in 4 wheel drive on dry pavement without causing harm to the transfer case.
