Gee, BigBird, it sounds like it would be just as cheap to change out the whole axle!

ThatÆs why I just replaced the bearing hub assemblies, and called it good, but anyway, the reverse cut Dana 30 I have in the front seems to do fine by me. I just can't believe the price of the kits, it just doesnÆt seemed priced right for what you get, but then I am not the one making the parts so who knows. It seems like if one had spare axles laying around didn't want to go through the trouble of shortening shaft, and tube, they could adapt the parts required from a 44 or an older 30 to add locking hubs if they really wanted to. But I don't know.

I didn't read all of the posts. So don't chastise me if I am repeating info. I own a 01' Grand Cherokee Lerado and it is all wheel drive all the time. From what the book reads it transfers torch from a spinning wheel to the rest of the tires when needed. I love the way it handles in the snow. Good luck to yours if you get it.

Ok, now riddle me this:
I got a Haynes' book for it and it has "vacume" controls going into the axle listed in it.
The hubs definantly engage and disengage because you can feel the difference turning. Backing about 30 feet with the 4W off seems to disengage them.
Hmmmm, more research forthcoming.

I'm reading from the owners manual, and it specifies how the Quadratec Traction Control works. Now it doesn't go as far as that but it does say that the torc from a spinning wheel goes to the remaining wheels that are not. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

I believe the vacuum controls you are talking about are what engage and disengage the front auto hubs.

Browne I am a bit hazy on all the posts in this thread but I think we are talking about all wheel drive here... I have never seen one with unlockable front end.. In fact I do not remember ever seeing one of these up close either.. so maybe these DO have an unlockable front end.

Hmmm, so it does have auto hubs, the vacume comtroll engages and disengages, according to the shop manual.

The Grand Cherokee has a totally different t-case (all wheel drive).....where the "Cheep Cherokee" has the same t-case's optioned in the Wrangler.....plus the "part time" 4wd locking differential option.
The part-time diff is just to keep it from binding on dry pave.

Part time four wheel drive can only be used in applications where the wheels will slip , such as: dirt roads, wet slippery roads, etc. Wranglers, as far as I know, do not come equipped with NP242 transfer cases.
