I got a Haynes' book for it and it has "vacume" controls going into the axle listed in it.
The hubs definantly engage and disengage because you can feel the difference turning. Backing about 30 feet with the 4W off seems to disengage them.
Hmmmm, more research forthcoming.

I believe the vacuum controls you are talking about are what engage and disengage the front auto hubs.
