Getting the Wheeling Fever
Anyone have any info on gears for the Gen3 trucks?

5th gear is almost unusable after I added the 33's.

Sure would like to be able to change the axle ratios...

you can go to the dealer and buy 4.90's and they're cheap. the expensive part is having someone else install them, that's why o did my own.

You can find hole axle assembly off junk yard pretty cheap. Out of Gen 3 01-02 XLS they got 4.90. It's direct swap. Only problem is to find used one with Hybrid LSD like in your current rear axle. Those tend to be more expensive and rare than open diff.

You've got 4.3. I've got 4.9 on my Gen3. Running 33 don't feel much different except for dismal mileage. I only felt real strain towing my popup at high altitude, or going over 75 mph.
4.9 will make nice difference on and off-road especially considering low 1 gear you have. In 1 gear low you'll have reduction almost matching Gen 2 or 1 with AUS 2.85 gears)

Hi Alex,
Out of curiosity did the five speed auto come with the 4.9 gears or was the change to the five speed when the 4.3 came in?

They were parallel on 01-02 trucks: XLS came with 4 speed and 4.9 while Limited had 5 speed and 4.3. After switching to 3.8L in 2003 on XLS and Limited came with same 5 speed and 4.3
